Coxhell top privateer again at Mallala

CJC’s Craig Coxhell fought hard against both the elements and the competition this weekend, keeping the Mallala crowd on their toes with some gritty riding to take 6th overall and top privateer. These results saw the CJC – Bisley Workwear rider edge further ahead of the Stauffer brother’s factory Yamahas (7th and 8th) and Kev Curtain on the Kawasaki (9th) in the ASBK championship.

Throughout the weekend, gusting winds and showers kept the entire field guessing and Saturday saw Coxhell successfully get through to the top 8 shootout. Unfortunately an untimely downpour forced the cancellation of superpole and final qualifying positions were maintained, meaning the teams and the crowd missed out on seeing who could put their best single flying lap down.

Raceday saw windy but relatively dry conditions and the Shepparton based rider put in a blinder of a ride in race 1 clawing his way back up to 6th and onto the back of the Suzuki pair of Giles and Bugden. With 2 laps to go and the crowd on their feet, Coxhell pushed past Giles and was attacking Bugden for 4th. It came down to the last lap and he dived past Bugden under brakes in the last section of the track but couldn’t pull it up in time to make the turn. He ran off track slightly allowing Giles through before rejoining and finishing in 6th.

Race two saw him battling hard to stick with Giles and Bugden again, despite a rear tyre issue that had the bike bucking around under power. It looked spectacular but ultimately the former Aussie Superbike champ had to settle for 6th once more after a couple of big moments pushing to catch the two Suzuki’s.

Craig Coxhell:
“I was pretty down on myself after race one. I knew I had a front fork problem but I still tried a braking move into the esses that in hindsight was a bit of a stretch. The forks bottomed out and I just couldn’t pull it up. It cost me a position, but that’s racing I guess – you’re out there to have a go! For race two we made some further changes to the front and had it working pretty well, but we had an issue with a rear tyre – it felt like it was going flat and I couldn’t get the power down properly out of the turns, it was bucking and carrying on instead of driving and I was having to make it up again on the brakes. In the end I was pushing so hard I nearly came down into turn 3 a couple of times and had to settle for 6th. Still – we maintained our average and put a little buffer on the guys behind us in the championship so we’ve got to be happy with that”.

Crew Chief – Rob Coxhell:
“We’re happy with our results here. Craig was as fast this weekend as he was on the Factory Suzuki last year, so we’re on the right track and learning all the time. Out of the box the bike had some issues this weekend and we were a bit behind on the first day, but everyone did a great job and we improved it each day and Craig rode the wheels off it. Thanks to all our supporters and fans, it was great to have so many people in the crowd cheering for us this weekend. We’ll be out next at the Australian Superbike Open at Phillip Island in two weeks and hope to put on a good show for the V8 crowd.”
